Irwin I. Cohn Michigan Jewish Cemetery Index
The Irwin I. Cohn Michigan Jewish Cemetery Index provides burial information for over 64,000 Jews who died between the mid-1800's and 1999*.While many cemeteries were very helpful in allowing access to their records, old, damaged, incomplete, or missing records made the task of compiling a complete index impossible. As a result, our database does not contain every name. If you do not locate the name of a specific individual, please be advised that that person may well be buried in a Jewish cemetery in Michigan; this index is intended as a "first stop" for researchers. A list of cemeteries is also included in the Index; please contact a cemetery directly for more information. As more burial information is received (especially from cemeteries outside the metropolitan Detroit area), it will be added to the Index. *For information on those who have died more recently, please visit the Detroit Jewish News obituaries. Matilda Brandwine, Founder and Honorary Chairperson
Matilda Brandwine had incredible insight when she began researching the Jewish residents who were buried in the Detroit metropolitan area. She and her stalwart team of volunteers gathered names, sometimes walking through cemeteries, writing down names from deteriorating headstones so that no one from the community would be forgotten. With the increasing interest in genealogy, their work has become ever more vital. |
